I am so thrilled to finally announce that UNDER-RÂPT has been commissioned by the fine Arts @deyoungmuseum in #sanfrancisco and #Frankfurt to showcase our garments as part of their ‘contemporary Muslim Fashions’ Exhibition Opening Sept. 22 at de Young Museum in San Francisco.

It is very exciting and honourable to have the sweetest @halima - the most influential ‘ #hijabi ’ #model fronting the advertising campaigns for the exhibition & wearing our ‘Organic Hooded Baselayer’ and ‘Organic Raincoat’.

It’s an honour to be recognised for our contribution in the emerging #modestfashion industry and to be part of the first major museum exhibition to explore the complex, diverse nature of Muslim dress codes worldwide. The exhibition examines how Muslim women; both those who cover (their heads) and those who do not have become arbiters and #ambassador of style within and beyond their communities and have drawn mass media attention to contemporary Muslim life. #modest  #fashion #empoweringwomen #womenswear #personal #style

UNDER-RÂPT  has been influenced by brands such as #yeezy #fenty and #vetements that champion over-sized and relaxed silhouettes. Gender fluidity has been conveyed through fashion and now we see that the guidelines to dress modestly mean that over-sized forms are no longer regarded as unfeminine or deemed ‘unfashionable’ but instead are an expression of personality and individuality, and that is how the evolution of modest wear will continue to evolve and become more mainstream. I find that you do not necessarily have to be of Muslim faith, it may be through your social and personal values and that ‘modesty’ can be interpreted differently amongst varied religions, cultures and demographics and thus, we can not stereotype - YASMIN SOBEIH (creator of @under_rapt )

THE INTERVIEW

Question: CITIZENK - What is your background (education, …) and how did you start your label ?

Answer: YASMIN SOBEIH. As an English/Egyptian British Muslim, I have been fortunate enough to explore both traditions  and cultures and have always enjoyed embracing both sides of my ethnicity. Having graduated in Fashion Promotion with Styling before working professionally in Fashion Styling, Sales and Buying, I have always been particularly intrigued with how fashion and lifestyles are becoming more integrated in today’s modern societies.  With a thriving sports and healthy lifestyle retail market and emerging modest fashion industry, it became apparent that there was mainstream limitations for both Organic and Eco-friendly sportswear and trend-driven Modest active and loungewear. Therefore, I blended my passion for fabric innovation, unique Fashion Design, Fitness and healthy living and applied this to a business plan during my Post-Graduate Fashion Buying and Merchandising course, thats how UNDER-RÂPT was born. 

Fashion retailers have been exposed in the media regarding their corporate responsibility in ethical labouring and environmental wellbeing. As such, customers now consider where and how the product is made and there is an increased shift and demand for transparency within fashion retail. Whilst style is uncompromised, UNDER-RÂPT uses ecological and organic fabrics that are sweat resistant, breathable, kind to the skin and hygienic - well suited to Active and Lounge wear apparel. My ambition to create an overall lifestyle women’s wear brand meant that my attention on merging ethical and organic fabrics with innovative product design was of huge importance. I believe that to inspire women to live healthier lifestyles then it must start at the core of the product and by sourcing environmental friendly fabrics and upholding ethical manufacturing we are not only increasing personal health and wellbeing but also encouraging and contributing to the welfare of our planet to conform to our consumers social and personal values.

By merging organic fabric with trend-driven modest wear, I have created the world’s first sustainable Modest Athleisure brand!

Question: CITIZENK Besides the market opportunities, how do you relate yourself to the modern athleisure consumer/woman ?

Answer: YASMIN SOBEIH. Whether it is Thai kickboxing, Sunday Yoga sessions or endless ‘food feeds’ on social media, I am an enthusiast of healthy living and wellbeing and I embrace this by living within the dynamic urban-city lifestyle. From energetic workdays, morning workouts, traveling and laid back brunches with friends, I am apart of these modern trends and culture. Therefore having travelled frequently and absorbing diverse cultures and religions,  I realised a growing amount of ‘modest'  females especially within the younger generation are expressing themselves through their participation in modern global consumer culture and therefore it became apparent that there was a lack of affordable organic and fashionable modest activewear specifically tailored to meet their social and traditional preferences.

Question: CITIZENK. What is your own definition of « modest » apparel ? Is it anyhow related to religion or tradition ?

Answer: YASMIN SOBEIH. With modest fashion weeks in London, New York and Dubai now running alongside ‘ mainstream' Fashion Week and models such as Halima Aden being the first ‘covered’ model to walk the Yeezy season 5 show and feature on the cover of Vogue magazine most often the word ‘modest’ is related to the Muslim market. Yet, I find that you do not necessarily have to be of Muslim faith, it may be through your social and personal values and that ‘modesty’ can be interpreted differently amongst varied religions, cultures and demographics and thus, we can not stereotype.

Through the role of multi-channeling, retail globalisation and social media global trends are integrating and this is largely expressed through fashion and lifestyle trends. UNDER-RÂPT has been influenced by brands such as YEEZY, FENTY and VETEMENTS that champion over-sized and relaxed silhouettes. Gender fluidity has been conveyed through fashion and now we see that the guidelines to dress modestly mean that over-sized forms are no longer regarded as unfeminine or deemed ‘unfashionable’ but instead are an expression of personality and individuality, and that is how the evolution of modest wear will continue to evolve and become more mainstream.

UNDER-RÂPT presents its ready-to-wear range such as organic lightweight Raincoats, Organic Relaxed jumpsuits and Organic Oversized Tees with the core sportswear range focusing on practical, timeless and resourceful sport shapes. Although UNDER-RÂPT conforms to Muslim females, product has been mindfully designed to also serve those looking for Eco-friendly and stylish Athleisure without the pressure to show skin. For example our 'Organic Hooded Baselayer Top' can be worn as a Hijab or has been worn by Athletes such as Boxers and Cyclists to keep hair up tight with the moisture control and breathable fabric components ultimately enhancing sports performance.

When creating clothing we have to think on a global scale; appealing to the mass market. The ease and freedom to travel worldwide means that designers are constantly inspired by assorted cultural dress, beautiful traditional architecture and exciting foods all of which can inspire an entire collection. Designers are now criticised if they do not showcase models of diverse ethnicity, religion and race and are considering a much more broader consumer base as women globally are now merging western fashion and trends with social ethos, personal values, culture and traditions. I have noticed a significant growth in  ‘Covered’ models on the mainstream runways that may not necessarily be of Muslim faith yet designers such as Marc Jacobs and Dior are acknowledging this evolving ‘modesty movement’. It seems strange that people have forgotten that global icons such as Audery Hepburn and Sophia Loren were renowned for their head coverings and high fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent has been showcasing head wraps for over 60 years.

Question: CITIZENK. How you will describe the style of your brand/collection ? Who are you targeting ?

Answer: YASMIN SOBEIH.

UNDER-RÂPT is practical, accessible and contemporary.

Conquering the everyday active lifestyles of women worldwide, UNDER-RÂPT poses as a platform between social and cultural values and influential western trends; confronting the stereotypes by offering it's unique product to encourage and inspire women globally to LIVE, EXPRESS and PERFORM healthier lifestyles and that UNDER-RÂPT product will be accredited and sought-after by women of all faith, culture and ethnicities.

The vision of UNDER-RÂPT is to refresh the Athleisure market and resonate with a broad international audience. From the dedicated fitness/health conscious and professional sport athletes (who seek sweat-resistant, breathable and organic products) to the fashion savvy, social millennials to the Modest customer looking for product specialised and catered to them, UNDER-RÂPT fills a gap in the global marketplace for an affordable fashion-led and sustainable Athleisure brand.

The countries that I visit inspire my creativeness and it may just be the local textile and fabric market, a particular building or the exciting street style that trigger my imagination to create fresh dynamic in my designs.We deliver quality and durable product and as fabric is specially made for UNDER-RÂPT, ‘fast fashion’ is not applicable to our brands aesthetic. Instead, to keep collections refreshing I visit fashion tradeshows and depict innovative organic fabrics and combine this with trend-driven silhouettes, in-season colours and the latest detailing such as waterproof decorative taping, the latest zip technology or lightweight embellishments to enhance the effectiveness of UNDER-RÂPTs active and urban design aesthetic.

We want our consumers to find something new and exciting in our collection each season that nods towards current trends but is practical, resourceful and ageless.

FASHION RETAIL SUSTAINABLE AND ETHICAL PRACTICES

After the unforgiving collapse of the Rana Plaza factory in Bangladesh in 2013, and more recent reports of child labour, refugee ‘cheap’ and unequal pay, cultural and religious ignorance and immoral working hours, Fashion retailers and Designers have been at the centre of many media publications and are being exposed surrounding their corporate responsibility in ethical laboring and manufacturing.

As a result of such controversies, Fashion Revolution - a global organisation responsible for the ‘Who made my Clothes’ campaign, calls for full transparency in the fashion retail supply-chain. The Fashion Revolution 2018 index states that ‘12 brands and retailers (8%)’ including Dior, Sandro and MaxMara have scored 0% for supply-chain transparency and are unable to disclose their ethical and sustainable practices.

A main concern in the fashion industry is that Retailers and Brands are demanding larger quantities and fast production; therefore, suppliers are under immense pressure to deliver in quick time and are outsourcing and sub-contracting manufacturing without necessarily having the consent of Retailers and/or Brands. These third parties may be involved with unethical manufacturing and as such it must be acknowledged that such retailers and Brands are not in control of their own supply-chain and are accepting unethical practices in turn for commercial business outcomes.

Take Primark as an example. My concern is that if a single T-shirt can retail at £2.50 that will include fabric costs, factory/operations cost, labour costs, delivery and logistic costs whilst also making company profit on top on it; then we must ask ourselves ‘how much of that £2.50 is contributed to employee payment?’

Consequently, through great revelation there is now an inproved demand for organic and sustainable clothing. Customers are not just impulse buyers but are now considering where and how the product is made so that it resonates with their social, personal and ethical values. Having recognised this increasing shift, Fashion retailers, media publicists and fashion influencers seek original brands that conform to a sustainable supply-chain to dismiss any future drawbacks with consumer loyalty.

New and emerging brands have the advantage to carefully select suppliers and manufacturers from the start to ensure full transparency, as an example ‘Athleisure’ brand UNDER-RÂPT launched in 2017 and specifically chose its fabric and garment producers in its early stages to build valued relationships, establish direct communication and will make regular visits to safeguard and uphold it’s responsibly in ethical manufacturing. Where as, retailing giants such as ASOS, Hugo Boss and YSL are amongst many retailers reported by the Fashion Revolution who ‘have increased their level of (supply-chain) disclosure’ and have to backtrack and change their supply-chain operations.

In addition to ethical manufacturing, we now have increased concerns for eco- friendly and environmental fabric sourcing and how the clothing we buy and choose to wear is harming our plant and the environment. With reports of water, and natural minerals in decline and global warming concerns, surely we must question that if we are damaging our plantation and forestry land then how can we harvest crops and organically grow our food whilst keeping our planet beautiful and green. Understanding the impacts is key if we are to consciously make a change.

In turn for faster fashion, many retailers and brands are opting for synthetic fabrics such as Polyester and Elastane as the popularity and frequency usually mean that ‘stock’ fabric is readily available with global suppliers. However, such fabrics impact significantly to energy, harmful waste, destroying forestland and releasing emissions into the air and water from disastrous chemical methods.

The sustainable angle is a non-profit organisation that focuses on minimising the environmental impacts in the fashion industry by introducing retailers and buyers to eco-friendly and organic textiles as well as giving access to international ethical fabric and yarn mills.

It is apparent that multi-brand retailers are increasing their eco-friendly and fair trade brand offering as a result of customer demand with ASOS forming their #fashionwithintegrity campaign and Selfridges launching ‘Project Ocean’. ‘Millennials in particular are interested in more-sustainable solutions; with 66 percent of global Millennials willing to spend more on brands that are sustainable’ - The Business of Fashion, January 2nd 2018.

The use of Eco-fabrics in our clothing not only means that we are contributing to the wellbeing of our planet but that organic components also have been proven to increase personal hygiene and welfare. Fiber innovation companies Lenzing Group have developed technology that sustainably source fibres from agricultural land. They have advanced fibers such as TENCEL® and MODAL® that are hygienic, kind to skin, breathable and sweat resistant. This cannot be guaranteed in synthetic fabrics.

Products such as bed linens and towels have been using TENCEL® and MODAL® fabrics for sometime but now fashion is also seeking synthetic replacements. Brands such as UNDER-RÂPT use Lenzing’s fibers in all products as their smooth surface; moisture absorbent and cooling components are well suited to Sports and Loungewear Apparel. As a lifestyle brand UNDER-RÂPT believes that if it is to inspire and promote healthier living then that must start at the core of their product.

With global trade fairs and organisations like the Sustainable Angle, Fashion brands have the resources and knowledge to improve their sustainable practices. Thus, if we know that customer are becoming more aware of the impacts that fashion has on our environment and are willing to pay more for ethical brands then surely as fashion brands we should work together and move away from ‘fast’ fashion. It may be a slow process or even a complete change in business procedures but every step towards sustainability counts. It is to be concluded that what we implement now will reduce the impaction for our future generations, and why wouldn’t we want the best for them?

“I’m inspired by brands like Kanye’s … a lot of the oversized trends in his ranges are applicable to Muslims and non-Muslims,” said Yasmin Sobeih, the British-Egyptian founder of Under-Rapt. “There is a huge market for fashion-led sportswear.”

The Manchester-born designer says that there is a particular growing demand for sustainable eco-sportswear.

“Nike doesn’t do it. No one does it. There is hardly any fashion-led, eco-friendly sportswear for the market or the Muslim market,” she said.

Armed with a master’s degree from the London College of Fashion, Yasmin created Under-Rapt as a trend-focused, ‘athleisure’ brand that hopes to join the surge of growing British trends for sustainability, sportswear and modest wear.

We see huge focus and growth in brands turning to ethical and sustainable sourcing as the rise in customers wanting to know who made their product and the implications it had on the planet. Department store Giant, Selfridges have announced that all brands that are sustainable and ethical will have a separate label to identify with. With an increasing rise on customers interest it is only a matter of time where everyone is concerned - so why wait?

 

 UNDER-RAPT take action now!

Having found a gap in the market for fashion led modest sports and athlesiure wear, under-rapt then realised that there also isn’t  another modest brand using high-tech, performance enhancing, sustainable fabrics and therefore this became a huge focus and USP to UNDER-RAPT. Although sourcing organic fabrics is more time consuming and less available to produce and manufacture it deems so important to UNDER-RAPT source sustainability as we are a healthy lifestyle brand, and therefore it is of significance that we implement this into designs to not only encourage personal hygiene but ensure it coincides with our customers personal and social ethical morals and values - contributing to our planet. 

The fabric used in our designs has sweat resistant, cooling and hygienic components which means that professional athletes from runners to boxers and gymnasts and both Muslim and Non-Muslim can wear the collection. For instance one product in the collection is a ‘hooded base layer’, it can be worn as a hijab or simply to keep hair up tight, either way using organic, sustainable fabrics means the sweat-resistant and breathable components is ideal for both. The combination of trend focused modest sports and athlesiure blended with sustainable fabrics makes UNDER-RAPT the first global ethical modest sports and loungewear brand.

SUSTAINABLE/ETHICAL MANUFACTUFACTURING

 A lot of high-street brands have been in the news of recent surrounding their corporate responsibility in ethical labouring overseas and after such controversies and exploitation surrounding sustainable manufacturing, customers are no longer just impulse buyers but consider where and how the product is made. UNDER-RAPT works closely with it's suppliers and monitors all of  manufacturing is done on site, and therefore able to see first hand factory standards and the labouring. It is within UNDER-RAPTs deepest interest that we adhere to ethical and sustainable trading throughout the supply-chain and ensure to uphold its responsibility in ethical and sustainable manufacturing.
